How to Read Your Cats Body Language

The Tail (Emotional Barometer)
Straight Up (Slight Curve at Top): High confidence, friendly, and happy to see you.

Low & Tucked: Fear, submission, or severe discomfort.

Thumping or Swishing: Agitation, frustration, or overstimulation—time to give them space.

Puffed Up ("Bottle Brush"): Defensiveness or intense fright, intended to make themselves look bigger.

The Ears & Eyes

Forward & Relaxed: Calm, curious, and content.

Flattened Back ("Airplane Ears"): Fear, aggression, or high alertness.

Slow Blink: Ultimate sign of trust and affection (often called a "cat kiss").

Dilated Pupils: Playfulness/excitement in low light, or intense excitement, fear, or arousal.

Body Posture & Vocalizations

Exposed Belly: Signals safety and trust in their environment—though it isn't always an invitation for a belly rub!

Arching Back with Raised Fur: Threat response or extreme fear.

Soft Purring: Usually contentment, though low-intensity purring can also be a self-soothing mechanism when injured or stressed.
